Essential Summer Home Security Tips

Essential Summer Home Security Tips

While the benefits afforded through strong, high quality deadbolt locks last year round, there’s a number of additional security concerns associated with the warm and wild months of Summer. Here’s a guide to some of these essential Summer Home Security Tips, as prepared by the lock installation experts here at Sonic Locksmith.

Summer Door Security

Make sure to keep your doors locked at all times. Even when you’re lounging outside or mowing the lawn. Back doors and garage doors should also be kept locked. We recommend installing a high quality automated home security system that operates with your smartphones to allow you to lock and unlock your home’s doors at a distance for maximum control and peace of mind.

Summer Window Security

Windows can provide an ideal entrance space for intruders when left unlocked. Make sure that your windows are locked and closed whenever you’re not home or sleeping - as much as you want a cool Summer breeze, it’s simply not worth the risk. Consider how easy it is to lock your windows versus how much stress and work is involved with dealing with the repercussions of a home break-in.

Garage Summer Security

Make sure to keep your garage locked even when you’re trimming the grass or doing yardwork. You may get distracted by a visitor or phone call and take your eyes off the garage. This gives ample opportunity for any criminal passerby to go inside your garage and potentially steal expensive power equipment or even gain entrance to your home! ng for burglars, so we recommend securing these items with locks as much as possible.

Lockout Tips

Lockout Tips

While the benefits afforded through strong, high quality deadbolt locks last year round, there’s a number of additional security concerns associated with the warm and wild months of Summer. Here’s a guide to some of these essential Summer Home Security Tips, as prepared by the lock installation experts here at Sonic Locksmith.

Check Unlocked Windows

While we don’t recommend leaving your windows unlocked for any reason, in this event an unlocked window can be a godsend. Try to remove the window’s screen, lift the window, and crawl through - just be careful not to hurt yourself!

Remove the Doorknob

While we don’t recommend this (we think it’s a much better approach to contact a licensed locksmith expert who can do the work themselves) you may consider removing the doorknob. Some doorknobs have mounting screws or connections concealed, with a small pin sized hole under or to the side of the knob. Use a bobby pin or paperclip to press inside this hole - keep pushing as far as possible while pulling and twisting the doorknob, all while applying pressure, until the door knob comes off. Then, remove the decorative plate to show the locket - and then pull the locking mechanism back and the door should unlock.

Why Spare Keys Are Cheaper Than Replacement Keys

Why Spare Keys Are Cheaper Than Replacement Keys

We’ve all done it. You find yourself rummaging through pockets, walking briskly from room to room, looking under couch cushions, retracing our steps—and maybe even blaming the dog—all for a lost set of keys!

Often times they never turn up. In the case of car key fobs, the loss can lead to costly replacements and time spent without the use of a vehicle.

It's Important to Be Proactive by Having Extra Keys

At Sonic Locksmith, we have several proactive solutions to avoid the frustration and expense associated with misplaced keys.

People often wonder: Why are spare keys cheaper than replacement keys? The answer is simple. For cars, dealerships charge a substantial fee to “re-key” new fobs to program them to properly function with your car and security system. For homes, a new deadbolt and keys cost significantly more than a simple set of spare keys.
